Lemon Tree Attack

Seasider says:

Can any one tell me what is attacking my lemon tree. I keep picking off these brown scabby things. I've sprayed with Bayers and still they appear. Some of the leaves have curled and it has some yellowing. The tree has been outside for the last month or so.

They are scale insects, their outer scales protect them from sprays. The method I remember using was to wipe the leaves and stems with a cloth dipped in methylated spirits. I am sure there are newer and better methods available now, possibly a systemic insecticide.
