    Going on the leaf shape and the growing tip I would say it was  one of the bryonys. Possibly black bryony a hedgerow climber.

    First two show where the root's meeting the soil and the third's probably the largest leaf.  I don;t remember there being any more than 2 shoots when I planted the rhodo a month ago, but there are now 4 separate shoots coming through the bark mulch.

    yes, growing, in situ.

    could be black bryony, the root doesn't look like bindweed

    Thanks again everyone - the consensus is black bryony, which I know nothing about, but presume it's usually a weed and will need chemical treatment if I want rid?
