ANOTHER Plant ID

I was hoping this was going to be a lovely clematis or something when it started growing but it's turned into a wild monster! What is it?

It looks like a clematis from here image

There's all different sorts - some grow bigger than others and flower at different times ... has it had any flowers this year?  How long have you known it?

It looks as if it needs a trellis or wires or something to climb up so that it's more spread out and less tangled.

Looks like a clematis. Have you given it something to climb up?

a wild monster of a clematis

I think I can see flower buds bottom left. That should ID it when they open.

There are quite a few such clematis, the montanas, though they will have flowered by now, the native wild one C. vitalba, that's at about the stage yours is at, small creamy/white flowers and the fluffy seed heads, Old Man's Beard. But lots more

  • Hmmmm interesting! We moved here in May 2015. It didn't flower last year but I put that down to it being hidden by bushes. This year it didn't have that problem and I've just taken the trellis down that was meant for it as it was all rotten. I've bought another to replace but it hasn't been put up yet. I can't see any buds?...

I can see what Nut means - bottom left hand corner, just above the brown stem ...

  • I've just inspected it and I still can't see any buds! Just new leaves shooting. I most definitely would have noticed flowers last year.

Did you plant it? If not, it could be old man's beard. I asked a similar question last year and it saved me a lot of grief! I dug out what l could and keep a close eye on any bits that pop out. If it's omb, you don't want it. If you go on a train journey, look out the window and see what could happen.

Looks like a variety of clematis montana judging by the growth habit and leaves.  Those flower on old wood in the spring so you should know early next year.  They are rampant growers so give it plenty of new trellis to climb.  One plant can cover several fence panels and it's often used to cover old sheds etc.  It gets quite heavy.

Agree with Bob there looks like a Montana.

  • We have a lovely Montana at the front of the house. This definitely hasn't flowered so far this year. I've been keeping an eye on it as I was aware I didn't see any flowers on it last year from May onwards. So in a full year it hasn't flowered. Is there anything out there that looks like this and doesn't flower?...
