When to prune espalier apples?
in Fruit & veg
Steve Topp says: I planted two 2 year old maiden apples trees to be grown espalier style and this is the second growing season in my garden. I can find information about how to train them but I cant find anything clear about when so any information will be gratefully received.

I do my summer prune on cordons in July, I would expect espaliers to be the same.
Thining the foliage lets more light get to the fruit and sun hopefully.
I've been doing the 'structural' pruning of my espalier pear in the late autumn/winter, but reduce the new growth/fruiting spurs etc in late June.

Thanks for the replies everyone much appreciated. I live in Leeds in an area with a lot of high terrace houses so the amount of sun I get is less than most so I guess I will try later summer this year and see what results I get. Thanks
