Stump grinding
Lisa9 says: I recently had 8 conifers cut down and the stumps left in. I had a new fence erected at the same time. I have now decided i would like to have the stumps removed while having other garden work done. The gardener has said he will hire a stump grinder and take them out, which i agreed to. After more thought, i am concerned because the stumps are only a about 9 inches away from the new fence. The gardener assures me that it will be ok. Has anyone used a stump grinder in a similar situation? Also, as the garden behind mine is slightly higher, will removing the stump destabilise the ground? I have concrete gravel boards at the base of the fence and I am having a load of compost dug into the bed.

Thank you. I am seriously considering cancelling the work while i think some more about it.
We had a large (0.5m + diameter) tree stump ground out last year - it was close against our neighbour's garage (about 8" away) but the work did not damage at all. It was well worth having it done as we can now plant up that area.
I agree with Pansy - check his/her insurance etc and get a written quotation.
