What is this weed?

roxbury says:

Anyone know what this is? I live in NY. It is similar to pokeweed/american nightshade but has pointier leaves and varied green shades in leaves.

It looks like what we call here in the UK a Willowherb. I believe you call it Fireweed in the US. I'm not 100% sure though.

  • if it develops pink / purple flowers then probably willowherb. Needs pulling up - invasive. Do not let it seed, you'll never get rid if you do.

Looking at the blotches on the leaves, it may be a Persicaria, possibly P. maculosa - the UK native annual type which is a common 'weed' of agricultural land - more ways of identifying it here  http://www.first-nature.com/flowers/persicaria-maculosa.php

but there are several types grown as garden plants.  I really like them. image

It looks a bit like a persicaria but my knowledge of American weeds is thin
