2016 - the year of the ant

Tony25 says:

Hi,

I seem to have ants appearing everywhere this year - several nests in raised beds, several places in the lawn, in the greenhouse, and in one of the compost bins which they have taken a particular fancy to.

Any ideas on control without covering everything in ant powder? (which doesn't seem to be doing much anyway!)

Thanks.

Tony.

Hire a flock of green woodpeckers?

Ants like dry places so try giving your raised beds, compost heaps and greenhouse a regular thorough soaking so that they move elsewhere.   I'd just put up with them in the lawn but be careful where you sit or lie as they bite and it hurts.

To get rid of ants, you have to kill the entire colony in one thorough move or they just disperse and set up several small new colonies....

This topic has been covered several times over the last few weeks but with the Forum having a few 'bugs' at the moment you may not be able to find them. If you type Ants into the Search the site box you may be lucky and find all the posts.

  • I sympathise. We had them bad last year but this year is a whole other level. Througout the patio, the whole lawn, even ruining some root systems of the plants. Tried nematodes - no luck. Particularly annoying because I'd love my little girl to enjoy her first summer by crawling around the garden - but I daren't let her for fear of accidentally making the ants angry

Do an internet search for "ants borax sugar."
