Shrivelling/rotting flowers on day lilly?!

Ian142 says:

Hi all

hoping for some advice! We've got a nice patch of day lillies in our back garden, in pretty much full sun, under a tree, but quite wet soil with the rain we've had lately.

it has quite a lot of flower buds on it, none open yet, but yesterday i noticed a large proportion of them were deformed/shrivelled, i cracked one open and found it was rotten and mulchy inside. I pulled the bad ones off today, and broke open another - had what appeared to be 5mm long maggots inside, not sure if they have caused the problem, or if they've just got inside the flower after it's started rotting.

Tried looking up what the problem might be and i'm at a loss. I couldn't find an obvious bit of info about flower parasites, and the only fungal things i could see seem to affect the crown/leaves as well as flowers; the leaves seem fine to me.

any ideas? At a bit of a loss. Happy to just pull off the bad flowers but if it's something that might spread i really need to get it under control as we've got quite a few lillies, irises and tulips of various sorts in our garden...

Yes!  I think that's it. Great thanks,  I will try to pull off all the affected flowers and hope it comes again...

Ian 142 - I struggled with the same problem for 5 years, never getting a bud to flower. I then read that it's the early flowering plants that get affected.  Said plant was binned.
