FG I like formal gardens but no longer want one with hedges. I have a "formal" bed at the front - box hedge round 3 sides and trellis on the 4th with roses and clems in diagonal rows and underplanted with heuchera, hardy geranium, alliums and so on.
My electric hedge trimmers don't cut well any more so OH insists on doing the box by hand but doesn't understand about neat, right angle edges and corners so it's a bit of a wavy mess. I give in and, don't want to be bending down to clip more formal shapes and knots as my back and knees get older and knotted themselves.

Wonky lovely photos, thanks for sharing. Think my favourite is gate, love gates!
the knot garden was interesting to me, did I detect a touch of the dreaded blight?
Obelixx last year I relented and had the box cut by power hedge cutter. Ruined it, shan't make that mistake again, errr when your o h is finished could you ask him to pop round please?
loved the wild garden, the grass cutting was interesting too

Hello Wonky, we just missed you! We went to Helmingham Hall the end of June, but I haven't yet had time to post photos, so I'll put them here. But they are very like yours!

Lovely pix Wonks. That's my favourite way to view gardens - other people's photos!
Glad you all had a great day.
Agree with you about the house Hazel. That type of garden needs the right backdrop
I lust after knot gardens and parterres on a regular basis obelixx
If I could only have one type of garden, it would be a formal one.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Nice set of photos Wonky
Just a couple from me, Veronicastrum and Salvia, covered in bees, I like that.

I thought the hedge looked a bit rough too LP. Couldn't decide if it was 'blighty' or just clipped a bit 'tighty'....
