They did a test of labels & markers/pencils at Which, and found many of the "permanent" markers faded in a season. For longest-lasting marking they recommended aluminium labels and pencil - which you can remove with a rubber, or if it's been there a long time, with fine sandpaper. Haven't tried it though cos the labels are expensive. I'm dropping hints for Christmas...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Thank you Chicky! Had to go get picnic stuff and checked out Rymans, guess what? They have a Sharpie sale on Sadly the double ended weren't in it but the pack of 5 fine were half price, sorted.
Best go make the sandwiches now, off to Hampton for annual treat.
"The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it." Sir Terry Pratchett
I must have tried most of the Permanent water proof pens out there and spent a small fortune trying to find one that does not wash off in a couple of months. I buy the white plastic 4" & 6" straight labels, also the T labels small and large. I have found and now mark all my name labels in the darkest leaded pencil l can buy. None of the writing has washed off or faded.
A little tip if you want to clean your labels to rewrite another name on them, Go to the £1 shop and buy a box of Brillo Pads you will never use all of them ever. Rub one of these over pencil or maker pen dry or wet makes the label new again.

Felt tip pens Joyce.
Herbaceous - the ones I have are double ended - medium nib on one end, and fine on the other.
Sharpies here too - but I use an ultra-fine nib which allows me to write more info on the label. Manager at Peter Beales roses recommended them to me.
Keep meaning to try some black labels with white marker for border plants - I believe they don't fade in the same way as black on white.

Went to my trusted GC and he gave me a pen just with "fine permanent marker " written on it
I thank you all for the advice and I will let you know how his recommendation works
