Snails?
I have successfully grown some clematis and jasmine up a wall, and some shrubs at the bottom of it. The shade they now provide, though, has meant a massive increase in snails living on the wall. Do I really have to go out every morning and pick them off?

No, you can leave them for the birds. If they are eating your plants then you can pick them off.
If I see any I get rid asap... If the birds etc haven't had them by 10.30am, they are gone!!

Ok this might sound crazy but is it at all possible that snails eat/destroy the mortar in brick walls?
And thanks for all the responses by the way.
Never heard of that one Hogroast!
But they're capable of anything...
The best way of fighting them is to go out and pick them off. I find it more useful at night, especially in spring when new growth appears as the plants are more vulnerable at that point. Once clematis get more mature, and probably jasmine too (I don't have experience of jasmine as it's not reliably hardy up here) they can cope better with attacks, but you still need to be vigilant.
Many people have success with other methods- slug pubs, copper tape, organic wool barriers etc, but I gave up on all that years ago!
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
