Plants with gravel

Xyz123Xyz123 Posts: 53

Hi

Just looking to sort out two sections of our North facing front garden. We have alkaline clay soil.

Area does get sun in summer as other than right in front of house it is not fully in shade.

I have three corners, two large ones and a small one. At the moment I have one very big spotted laurel in one corner. There other small corner has one rose.  The third corner is full of weed and am looking to sort that out as well as remaining space in section with laurel.

I have two plants in pots (acer palmatum and hydrangea ). I was thinking of putting down 2 inches of gravel on top of weed membrane and then plant these two as well as couple of Hebe heartbreaker plant I have got. Plus I want to get Hardy fuschia plants.

Any other suggestions or any advise if gravel will create any problem with these plants...ta

Any chance you could upload a picture to give an idea of the area and its relative size?

Hi Xyz. I think you have a pretty good idea yourself as to what to do. I would be tempted to use slate chippings rather than gravel as the dark colour will absorb heat from the sun and create a warmer micro climate around the plants in your north facing garden. I would put the Acer in the other big corner - bearing in mind it is deciduous and clearing gravel of leaves after they fall can be a bit of a pain. I would also be tempted to put all the deciduous plants in one bed to make leaf clearing easier.
