There's also a garden which I think is not too far from Loch Melfort near Oban. Can't remember the name at the moment - will come back to you on that one.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
On the way up would also recommend Larch Cottage Nursery in Melkinthorpe nr Penrith. Ver quirky gardens, lovely plants to buy and an excellent Italian restaurant for lunch. Went for an hours whizz round - stayed all day!

Arduanie is the one near Melfort but more of spring and summer interest.
South West: there is an excellent garden trail in the area round Stranraer including Logan Botanical gardens, warmed by the Gulf Stream, as is Inverewe. If interested in rare plants, Cally Palace Gardens are superb, near Gatehouse of Fleet. Allow plenty of time. There is the re-done walled garden at Dumfries House in Ayrshire (Prince Charles's project) and the house is worth visiting. The National Trust gardens at Threave are excellent and require the best part of a day for a visit.
I think we'll only be going as far north as Fort William as we have hired a 1960's VW camper and it doesn't go fast and it's limited to a max of 250 miles per day.
thanks for all the recommendations, i'd forgotten about rosemoor, i'll add it to my list
right, so we don't upset my old geography teachers. The west of Scotland is warmed by North Atlantic Drift, not the Gulf Stream,( which stops at Newfoundland)
Been to the Shoal a couple of times Fairy - seem to remember they served steak like an oversized kebab on a sword-type giant skewer - forgotten what it was called.
Love Melfort

Glendurgan is just next door to Trebah and also worth a visit.

Hosta re Gulf Stream _
The Met Office :-
"The warm Gulf Stream also has a strong influence on Western Scotland. . . . . "
At least it's beneficial
whatever we call it.
a mistake doesn't stop being a mistake because it's made often.
Hosta - had to laugh...'warmed'....
Melfort is lovely. There's a very good restaurant at Loch Melfort called the Shoal of Herring, if it's still there. The crayfish tails are fab...
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
