ID this wasp thing ?

Today these little wasp things burrowed out from under the patio. 

Does anyone have any idea what they might be.  I'm not sure it is wasp, although it might be, some sort of fly thing. 

I thought it was solitary bees making these holes but obviously not.  Thank you.

Hope you can see it clearly enough, it has two yellow stripes on its abdomen.

    It's the one in Pansyface's link or a similar species. It's not bee, wasp, hornet or anything in those groups

     I see from pansyface's link that they're not very common up here. Never seen one. Gorgeous.  image

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
