It's the sensible way with a small plant of any kind C3 - potting on. It just allows them to mature enough to withstand weather and pests more easily. Small plants can get 'lost' in open ground, even at this time of year when conditions are usually more favourable image

obelixx is in Belgium - she gets quite severe extremes of weather! The wet, windy cold we have up here is easier to deal with for Gunnera. Doesn't suit lots of other plants, but they cope with it more readily. You'll still have to be aware of long periods of frosts though.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

C3k: hope you don't mind me joining in the thread with absolutely no input regarding gunneras but I have to ask.... What's the inspiration behind your avatar pic?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of anything strange and slightly weird, it's just that most folks have images of their favourite flower/pet or a garden.  (Or in my case it's my feet) image

Is there a story behind it?

Mine is currently in a 60cm wide pot.  Last year its bigger leaves go to about 2' across.  As it's in a pot I cut them off at about that size to let the smaller, newer ones grow through to keep it looking fresh.

Once planted out in its new home I fully expect it to get to the size of the glorious monsters I have seen at the water's edge at Keukenhof with giant leaves and flower spikes coming from a base that spreads wider each year.

Yours is a little ambiguous pp.

Are you the owner of some crazy dogs? or a crazy lady who has dogs?

Dare I say a little of both image

Absolutely Plant Pauper.   And lots of purple!

Possum already worries about what I get up to but then she is very firmly Capricorn in nature most of the time.  Can be distressing for her Sagittarian parents.  I did tell the ob/gynae he should wait till after midday so she'd be Aquarian instead..........  Knew she'd find us embarrassing.
