Pepper stalks stripped

Hi everyone,

i have some gypsy F1 peppers that I am growing at my allotment, with black weed fabric on the ground and a mini polytunnel over the top.

I have just been to water them, to find that one had toppled over. On closer inspection, I found that eye bottom 1-2 inches of the stalk that was coming through the black plastic was totally stripped of 'greenness' and was down to a thin, woody centre.

Any ideas if this is insect damage, or perhaps some kind of damage from surrounding water?!

Not all are effected, some partially. There are also holes in the leaves where something has been eating it, but not slugs.

Many thanks,

Lauren

How do you know it's not slugs (or snails) Lauren?  They are the most likely culprits.  Molluscs don't always leave slime trails.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    Hi Bob,

Sorry, I also forgot a pic - excuse the orientation. I have secured or against a bamboo cane.

I guess I don't know that it's not snails, it's just that the damage is quite minimal, and it is sometimes just tiny holes in the very top leaves. I would expect slugs and snails to ravage them once they'd started? Although they do seem to be more keen on my potatoes at the moment! ?
