Pigeons vs Brassicas

Suz3Suz3 Posts: 105

I have grown a variety of brassicas this year and early on in the season there were decimated by pigeons. :-(

I managed to net them all and the majority are doing ok now. However the weeds went crazy around them so I have had a good old clear out today and removed the nets for ease.

I have returned a few nets around them but wonder if the pigeons are still likely to eat them or is it only the fresh new shoots that they like.

Any suggestions on how to thwart them would be very welcome! :-)

An air rifle is useful.  We shoot any wood pigeons that come onto the lawn. They will decimate any brassicas at any stage. Keep them netted. Also old compact discs dangling on strings seem to help deter them.

If there's lots of other food about they may leave your brassicas alone at this time of year but they'll definitely return to decimate them in the winter when fresh greenery is scarce ... however don't rely on them to leave them alone in the summer .............. image

    Hi all

They are an absolute menace and if your brassicas are not protected you lose big time.

At our allotment this year many a crop on the plots have been taken by them stripped to the core leaving nil, however you must protect them with what you can as they are watching you leave the plot and swoop down once you step out the gate.

I have the weapons ready as in a quality catapult and air rifle however they must have chatted amongst themselves warning each other as since getting prepared i have not seen one close enough

Good luck to all and if you can keep them covered all year round

    Happy gardeningimageimage
