rosa rugosa

dunnock2dunnock2 Posts: 1

From  a very inexperienced gardener.

I know Rosa Rugosa is grown for its' hips in autummn as well as the bright flowers.

If I deadhead now will the plant produce more flowers and I could then stop deadheading in, say, late August for the hips

OR does it flower once only and I should leave all the hips now?

Mine flower when they feel like it but a second flush could be a bit late to produce hips (especially this year, summer will be over before it starts). I don't deadhead mine.

Hi there. I have these in my garden - both pink and white - and I never dead head. They only produce one flush of flowers each year so if you were to dead head you would lose the lovely hips.

I had several in the garden where I used to live.  They tend to have a big flush in June and then sporadically therafter.  If you want the hips, which the birds also like, do not dead head them.  You will still get a few flowers until the end  the summer.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
