Garlic Splitting?
The last couple of years my garlic, planted in October and using the biggest cloves I could find has not been particularly large and has 'split' where it joins the main stem rather than that nice tight bulb which you get in the commercial stuff. I have produced the tight bulb in previous years. I live in Weymouth and the last two winters in particular have been wet and not frosty (rare down here). Is there a standard reason for the 'splitting'? The soil is clay and pretty well neutral ph. Thanks.

When you say 'Splitting' do you mean the bulb has opened up?? I think that is the case its probably been harvested a little late..
I had that last year.. You can still use them.
I will lift mine tomorrow and then leave them on the surface for a few days to ripen and dry... Depending on the weather.. I grew a variety called 'Marco' a pack of 3 bulbs was £2.99p I am hoping for a good amount.. My friends garlic were tiny this year about 3/4 of an inch in diameter!! I gotta beat that...
Yes they have opened and this happened for the last couple of years and yes I have continued to use the cloves. Maybe I am being too rigid about expecting them not to be ready until July given the changing climate. However they have been pretty small but not down to 15mm!! Cheers.
