I can't agree there ladybird, opulus has lobed leaves as in Vivien's pic, plicatum has simple ovate leaves

My guess is that this is the species V. opulus, the native Guelder Rose. Not a cultivar

Ha ha. Thanks to all for your help (and the entertainment). Think I'll take it back by half now As to be honest it's taking over a bit.

I found this today and it explains clearly why you shouldn't just chop the end off!
I tend to do haircuts and as nut says it ends up a shapeless blob. This lady explains it really well with the use of hand signals! ;-)
