Charlotte Pots CHITS

Hi,

First post so take pity. :--)

I bought some Charlotte seed potatoes and planted half so almost ready. Now the thing is I still have half which have sort of been ignored. So the thing is can I still plant them now, because the chits on them have a bulbous growth about the size and look of a purple grape!! but the chit is still on it ok and the spud well is just a little wrinkled. The thing that concerns me is are they going to be poisnous if I plant these weird spuds. haha

Bit late but plant them asap. You may have spuds for christmas if you grow them in the big bags and can give them protection from frosts in October.

    Cheers Fidget,

It was the 'Grape' I was iffy about. They will be here in plenty of time for Christmas as long as winter doesn't hit early. And I remember to put them in. haha

    Just a thought to anyone.

Seed and plant too the seasons, as they are now, and not what they were 60 yrs ago. Everything has changed and so many more seeds can be sown in May that use to be March. As long as they are fast growers to plant size before nights get really short then we will be fine.

Plant them but do protect them from Blight later in the Summer.

    Hi Edgar image

Charlottes don't really make good chips - they're good boiled/steamed hot or in potato salad.

Or one of my OH's favourites - boil them in their skins until almost cooked then drain, tip into a greased roasting tin, crush them gently with the back of a fork so that they're partly broken up, then sprinkle seasalt and olive oil over them and roast in a hot oven until they've got lovely crispy crunchy bits all over them .... delicious!!! image  He eats twice as many potatoes when they're cooked that way!

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
