As a first time gardener the most exciting thing I've seen grow so far was a bush variety of green been (called purple haze). i planted a couple of weeks ago and they are doing well but because of the very wet weather at the time I germinated a couple of them indoors to be safe and was astounded to see the large bean head emerge a few days later --- and then even more astounded at the rate the thing grew.
I realised after the fact that the warmth indoors was a recipe for leggy beans (very much not a good thing!) but I was just thinking that time moves that much slower for children so the speed these guys grow might be exciting for your son.
the first two pictures were taken 7 hours apart on the day the beans first emerged from the soil and the next one was early the next day
Hi everyone! Thanks for all the replies! Well I went out today and we bought radishes, peppers, spring onions, beans and carrots some new pots to plant them in, gro-sure soil, watering can etc for these to all go outside .. then we also have some chives, parsley and rocket to grow on the window sills! Oh and some wildflower mix that he wanted for his play area pots.
Bit disappointing as we also wanted some tomatoes but they seemed to all be from January - April. I couldn't find any cress seeds.
My son had a blast just buying it all, he loves flowers and outside. It's such a joy to see him pick things out.
We'll be sowing them all in tomorrow (1st July) after school and we will hope for the best, all the packets except the beans (which ends in mid June) say they are suitable to sow still so I see no reasons why they wouldn't grow. Fingers crossed for us!
I will post pictures of our attempts / success when I can. All the replies have been much appreciated and really helped me get the confidence to give it a go with him.
