Moving house

Lena NLena N Posts: 189

Hello

Please can anyone offer some advice? We are buying a house and will be moving in within the next couple of weeks. We have been renting for the last few years and over that time I've bought quite a few plants, some in pots and some are in the borders. I'm planning to take my favourites with me when we move, but as it will be July and many are in bloom I wondered what I can do to minimise the stress for them? I know it's not an ideal time to be moving plants about.

Generally the weather has been a mixture of sunshine and showers and looks like this will continue over the next week and temperatures around 13-15 degrees (don't know if that's helpful information or not)!!

Any advice welcome image

I'd look to the future and sacrifice this year's flowers. Cut them back and pot them up now.

The roots are a priority  i'm afraid this year. All the strength your plants are producing now needs to be redirected and focused in to establishing a good root system . So off with those flower heads.Your plants when planted up will probabley go over for a while. And others may not pull through.

Do you recommend adding anything to the planting holes to help get them established in their new home once we have moved?

Use some of that fancy fungi stuff they have now when you plant them, and some fish and bone, that will give the roots a good start. Plenty of water for the whole season too. I'd also remove at least 1/3 of the foliage. I did the same thing last year in a scorching couple of weeks in June. I moved small plants and also some big shrubs. Worst time of year but they were fine! My peony flowered beautifully this year as did the camillea.
