help needed to identify this snake and possible solution?

So while working on my garden and mulching, I saw this good size snake enjoying the sun. I would like to think this is a garter snake which every known information claims is harmless.

looks little different than garter snake though. I have kids who obviously are running all over the place. Even if this is garter snake I would like to move it away as humanely as possible. Have no plans to kill it

can someone help me identifying and suggestion ?

Its the head and nostrils which makes me think this may not be a garter snake ?

    Hi masshomeowner

most of us are UK and Europe based, not familiar with garter snakes, sorry

The fact that it's eye covering has misted over indicates that it's about to shed it's skin.  It may well move on after that has happened.

  • that's correct Dave...don't know much about their cycles but that has been happening quite often I think. found two relatively new and completely intact snake skins in the garden...don't think that the dude is planning to move anywhere though

It definitely looks like a garter or ribbon snake, neither of which pose any threat. Dovefromabove is right in that it is about to shed its skin.  t It will likely just move on but the British Herpetological Society may be able to put you in touch with someone local or advise you if needed. I myself would love such an amazing find in my garden because I love reptiles but I can understand those that find them less endeering.
