Strange plant...?
Dear All,
Does anyone know what this plant is? Its coming up in several spots in my garden and I don't know what it is, whether it is poisonous, should we keep it, remove it... Please advise.
Many thanks,
Shena

no leaves, no green parts?
I think that's one of the broomrapes, Orobanches. All parasitic on something, ivy, grass, lots of things but specific to the species. That's an exciting find, I'd love to have that in my garden

It looks like one of the Broomrape or Orobanche family. A parasitic plant that lives on the roots of other plants. Still very pretty though. If you know what plants are nearby you can look up which particular Broomrape you have.
Snap nutcutlet. I'm quite envious too.
Yes ladybird, I tried to get Ivy Broomrape started once, I've got enough ivy to support acres of it, but it didn't take

Well I don't know if they would grow where I am in the north - very much doubt it as they seem to be southerners..
I used to see what was probably Common Broomrape in places where I used to live in S. Cambs.

Yes, one of the broomrapes.
In a previous garden we hade Orabanche minor appear on a bank of white clover - fascinating

Thanks everyone, really interesting and my first visit here is acclaimed a success!I Will wait for them to develop but am pretty sure that all of the appearances are around various forms of Ivy.
If anyone knows how to take cuttings then am happy so to do and to hold if there are any amongst you that would be interested in same. Certainly some of the corms that were dug out by accident appear now to be growing. The next question may be how to limit their spread as we are working hard to do with Chinese Lantern plants!
Thanks all and good gardening - or whatever the equivalent is on these threads. Take care
