  • Lonicera purpusii perhaps, no twining stems just straight up and out branches, flowers in the winter on bare stems and smells divine.

    I think it's a climber that isn't climbing yet

mine didnt climb for two years. This year it has gone bonkers.  I thought it was mislabelled and was about to dig it out if it didn't do anything this year.

I've had a few of those bare root shrubs from poundland and have learnt not to trust the labels.

A blue and a white buddleia turned out to both be 'spirea billiardii' and an escallonia was actually 'chaenomeles speciosa', that one was a nice mistake.

This is my pound shop philadelphus (bought last year). Stuck a photo on here a couple of weeks ago to confirm an ID before I planted it out. (Thanks again fidget)

Think it's a golden leaved variety, maybe aureus?

I treat them like a lucky dip, you never know what you'll get. image

The reason I thought it honeysuckle, was it looks like one I bought cheap, planted it ,lost the label, and for two years it has looked like that. This year it seems to have got into its stride, lots of twining shoots for the first time, and today it has pairs of scented white flowers, so I think mine is Lonicera japonica. It has much less showy flowers than  the Graham Thomas I have on the pergola.

I'm very pleased to be able to post pictures of this shrub doing very well, having grown very substantially over the winter and spring, and which is now in flower. You and Nutcutlet were spot on with the ID, it is a shrubby honeysuckle.

Obviously I'm very pleased and would like to get a definitve ID if possible. From the description and photo's of your Lonicera japonica FB, it looks as if mine could be the same. As you can see from the pic's I've taken it has tiny white, and pale yellow, flowers. White turning to yellow?

It's looking good. Does it have any scent?

Thanks for the update as I think you have solved my mislabelled 'buddleia' poundshop problem.

Sadly, I completely lost my sense of smell a few years ago after an episode of allergic rhinitis. It has recently started to come back intermittently but years of smoking and age hasn't helped, either.

Glad to have inadvertently helped image

Done! And I think you're right, thank you. It's great to have the benefit of your expertise on this forum Silver Surfer. I left the RHS forum ages ago because it was crashing my PC (I ruled out everything else). I assume it was because they weren't maintaining the site as they should.
