Redwood sapling struggling

Hi there

I am not greenfingered - in fact this is the first plant I've really tried to look after. I was given a giant redwood sapling as a gift from my other half after a trip to West Coast of US, so I really want to keep it alive!

Anyway, the sapling is about 20cm tall and the top 5 or so branches are growing like crazy. (see below for image) They have lots of light green shoots and in the 4 weeks or so I've had it they've absolutely burst out.

The lower branches are really struggling though. For a while they had brown tips and I pruned these off after some advice but now they just seem to be stuck in a sort of no grow zone. As a result the plant is becoming very top heavy and I just cant think that this is ideal.

I've started to try and water it from the little dish under the pot so that the deeper roots get more water, but I don't know if that's right or wrong. There have been no more brown endings, but still no growth.

Any help would be really appreciated!! Thanks

  • I suspect that it will not enjoy being grown indoors, I would grow it outdoors, in time it will be too big to grow indoors anyway.

It should look good in 500 years when it starts to mature!

  • Hi Alan,

Ok, I will try that. I brought it indoors because it was very hot, so will give it a go. (Also painfully aware that this is hardly a tree I'm going to see the benefit of!)

    Thanks!

I had 2 redwoods in big pots in my front garden for about 5-6 yrs. Tough as old boots.
They done well, but of course got too big
Best I don't say what happened to them image
