How Do I Get Rid of This

This is appearing in both my front and rear lawns and I have no idea how to get rid of it. I've tried lawn weedkiller, raking the grass to within an inch of its life but it just keeps coming back. Spoke to my local Garden Center who could only suggest employing a professional gardener who can use stronger chemicals. Before I do that I was wondering if anyone out there has come across it before and has the answer.

It looks a little like Dog lichen. If it is this you can use a lawn moss killer with ferrous sulphate in it and you may have some success. Make sure the lawn is well aerated by spiking with a garden fork and sweeping in some coarse sand as Dog lichen likes compacted soils with poor drainage and shade preferably.
