Tomatoes with a mind of their own

When growing tomato plants, every year the same thing happens: when the flowers appear on cordon types why is it that the spur always grows from the main stem directly towards the cane I am going to tie the vine back to, so that I am in danger of  damaging the flowering spur as I tie the vine in?

Anyone else notice this or is it just me?
