Random holes in flower garden

Hi Experts...I am a new home owner and recently took up the project of cleaning my flower garden and mulched the entire area. However I noticed some random holes which are not really deep. They look like someone tried digging hole and left it midway. See attached picture.

Noticed these holes before mulching. Anyone has any idea what's causing these holes and how I can prevent these ?

Its a little difficult to estimate the size of the holes from your photos. Would it be possible for you to put a coin alongside one of the holes to help with identification.

I'm wondering whether the OP is in the USA - possibly Massachusetts?

If so I'm not sure that we'd be able to identify with any certainty the wildlife responsible for the holes.

  • @ladybird4: I will take the pictures with a coin next to the holes and post again. However, just to give you an idea they are either the size of a quarter or in some case slightly bigger than a quarter (let's say 1.5 times of a quarter). Again, these holes are about 2-3 inch deep and some of the soil is always spread down from beneath the mulch.

Maybe some actual measurements rather than a quarter - we have pounds and pence over here. image

A quarter is pretty much the same size as a 10p coin if that helps!

  • while doing some research I think this maybe squirrels or ants (??) would be pretty big hole to dig overnight even for decent size army of ants....still figuring out if there is a long term or permanent solution to this.

    Do you have gophers?

I'm pretty sure it's squirrels. Anyone feeding them nearby?

do have a lot of squirrels but I don't think anyone is feeding them.
