What compost for fruit trees?

I have some apple seedlings - I know they probably won't ever give me apples but it was just a laugh. It was from a pink lady apple. They've grown quite big now and only in small 9cm pots. I think I used general compost. Would general be okay for going in a bigger pot and outside, or do I need to maybe add some organic or soil based such as John Innes? Thanks in advance.

Mix some compost and some JI and put into bigger pots outside. The JI gives added weight to the pots to make them more stable in windy weather.
