Pot or ground for wall climber

Hello,

After seeing a friends stunning Wisteria display I've been inspired to plant a climber on the garage wall at the end of my garden. Being inexperienced with climbers I could do with some advice on a few issues.

Wisteria is one option, although I'm also thinking of planting a fairly hardy Jasmine for more foliage and hopefully longer/more frequent flowering. And that fragrance of course! I'd like the climber to grow to cover as much of the wall as possible.

Currently I have a paved patio in front of the garage so I thought of planting in a pot (like my friend), but he thinks the pots have made life difficult for his plant. He is on a balcony and hasn't got a choice but he recommended ground planting if possible.

So one option is a continer (I'd consider a huge container if that is beneficial).

Alternatively, I could remove a couple of the paving stones against the garage wall and plant ini the ground if that will help. Is this a good idea, or will the surrounding paved area lead to bad growing conditions – draining etc.

I live in Kent and the wall is west facing with plenty of afternoon sun, a little exposed, but not too bad.

Thanks very much for the advice.

Definitely ground whichever climber option you go for! You can control the watering ect.

  • Thank-you, I guess I'll be pulling up a couple of paving slabs then.
