Tangled Clematis
As a beginner growing clematis bought a few years ago I have let them get very tangled and now all mixed up they are only flowering at the top of the trellis. I have learnt and more recent purchases are taken a lot more care of.
Can I cut down the tangled mess to around a foot when all flowering has finished in an attempt to regenerate these lovely flowers.
i don't now know the names of the older clematis but all flower between May and August.

Hi Mandeli.
See this website for more information: http://faq.gardenweb.com/discussions/2765992/how-do-i-prune-my-clematis-group-1-2-3s-or-a-b-cs
If they're only flowering at the top does this mean it's the new season's growth? If so, they're likely in group 3 - so pruning hard at the end of winter would be the best time.
Even if you prune 'wrong' or at the wrong time the plant should survive, it just might not flower to it's full potential next year.
