Pot plants dying off in middle
Hello all,
I have the same issue with three pot plants on my balcony: some pinks, an Arabis arendsii and a couple of Aubrietia. They've all put on a good show, but the Arabis and the Aubrietia are long over (I cut them back after flowering), while the pinks in question have about finished their first flush.
My problem is that they've died off quite a bit in the centre. The peripheral growth looks healthy, but the middle is brown and empty looking. They're not rotten, and if you cut the stems, they're healthy-looking inside.
Is there any trick to fix this problem? Should I simply have cut them back much harder? Can I do so now without risk of killing them?
Thank you!

You can divide them using the strong growth from the outer parts to make new plants. Lots of plants benefit from dividing like this, whether in the ground or in pots. If you used multi-purpose compost in the pots, it'll be exhaused of nutrients by now anyway.
I had this problem with containers of Violas, I added more water with Miracle gro and they recovered.. The other plants were Pansy and the flowers were eaten by birds..Can't do much about that..
