Is it possible for you to upload a picture so that we can see the plant to identify it?
Acanthus is quite a thug and I don't envy you getting rid of it, rhizomes go down very deep. If you can't dig it out you'll just have to keep mowing it to weaken it or resort to glyphosate, although that would kill all of the plant even that growing in the border. Good luck!
