Beetroot

Earlier this year I planted some beetroot plants in a couple of trough planters. Apart from the sparrows enjoying some of the foliage nothing else is happening. When should they be harvested.

I think I planted them March. My prob the sparrows have been having a feast on the leaf. There is no Sign of a beetroot yet. I've tried this for two years and ended up with nothing. Maybe it's time to give in.

    Hi Flowerpower

i planted my beetroot seed in modules in April and planted out once big enough in May.

i protected the plants early with a cloch to assist in the speedy growth to get them established.

Thay are well on and are forming the bulb underneath the foliage however estimate another three weeks before I start to take.

i have got beetroot planted all over my garden and at various stages and to say I am lucky regarding the foliage being devoured as previous posts on this topic readers have said the leaves just get eaten very quickly by birds.

try using some protection like fine debris netting just pegged over your boxes so that plants can get established

good luck and don't give up as fresh beetroot is a favourite taste just awaiting around the corner

    happy gardening
