Climber advice

Advice, please, for shallow, dry, sheltered west-facing spot - I've been told a clematis needs deeper soil. I've tried a honeysuckle but it has mildew and gets straggly. I'd like something with year-round interest. A tall order, I know!

How about a climbing hydrangea - Hydrangea petiolaris? This one is deciduous but there is an evergreen variety too - Hydrangea seemannii.

Thank you! I like hydrangeas, so will investigate.

Pyracantha is good and also good for wildlife and roses can cope with most soils.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
