Height of climbing rose

Jessica15Jessica15 Posts: 10

Hi! I have just bought a patio climbing rose to train up a trellis at the front of my house. It's rosa love knot. It's covered in flowers and smells gorgeous at the moment! I had to get a patio climber rather than a larger more vigorous one as there's no bed underneath the trellis, only Tarmac (lovely planning by whoever did that!) so it will have to go in a pot. I've bought the biggest pot I can fit there, it's about 70 litres. My question is about the rose's height; it grows to 6'. If I train it horizontally in a zig zag up the trellis the way you're supposed to does that mean the canes themselves will only grow to 6', therefore not growing to 6' in height up the trellis? So it won't reach the full height of the 6' trellis?

Sorry if that sounds like a silly question, it didn't occur to me until I got it home!

Let some grow vertically and train the rest horizontally.

    In London. Keen but lazy.

Ahh good idea. It's a narrow trellis so hopefully I shouldnt lose too much height. It has quite a few canes too.

You could aim for a fan shape

It's a tall thin trellis that runs up the front of a pillar so I won't be able to do it that shape. It's only about 2' wide!
