Help! can anyone tell me what this is? We would like to keep it but prune and shape it. Does anyone know? And can advise?

Did it flower? Camilla's can be pruned post flowering. Did mine about a month ago. If you prune now might lost next years flowers as they flower on this years growth

weve just moved in so haven't seen it flower. We have cut some branches from the bottom and I have found what looks like some brown dried flowers, possibly white? Which makes me think it's a camellia. I've just never seen one this huge!!! it's very big and overgrown, sadly been left to grow wild, hence wanting to prune. I just dont want to kill it by pruning too much.

They can, and do, grow very large over time with the right conditions. You can prune camellias successfully, and it would be fine to do it now. If you're worried, take some off now and do the same next year after it's flowered. A tidy up round the base, a feed and a good watering, followed by a mulch will help it recover from the haircut  image

Make sure it has plenty of water in late summer when the new flower buds are forming. It will be pretty dry round the base as the foliage canopy prevents rainwater getting through easily.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
