Thanks, BobTheGardener. I'll try the approach of digging-in a little of the previously-dug clay subsoil. IT seems wasteful to buy more soil if I don't really need to, and I'm sure the little wriggly and crawly things will correct any ommisions in time :-)
I'll get my beds ready to go tomorrow, and can now starting planting my seeds into modular trays in preparation. I'll also look at buying a decent tome on horticulture so that I won't have to ask so many silly questions in the future.
