Cordyline Australis
Hi, have been a reader of the forum for a while but first post...
I have several cordylines which typically do very well, however I have one exception. It's gone brown and spindly over the past 6-8 weeks, the only notable differences form the others are that:
1 I ordered online and it was delivered with fairly long leaves in quite a small pot in comparison to the others which I've bought in garden centres at smaller sizes.
2 its in a position in a raised border where its getting more sun than the others (which seem to thrive in damp, full shade conditions).
I have always liked the look of cordylines with multiple heads which I've read is achieved by lopping off their heads entirely and letting them regrow - I've been unable to bring myself to do this to date as it seems cruel to those that look so healthy!
However, I'm frustrated by this one and thinking that it could be the 'test subject' - cutting of its head, checking the roots and trimming if necessary and replanting in a more shaded, damper position.
My question is can it be done in June and are there any tips / aftercare to increase likelihood of success and number of new growth tips?
Thanks
RP

Photo of the offending plant, I put the supports in as it doesn't seem to be able to support its own weight

Those leaves are dead. Just remove them. It's probably transplant shock - any plant with a lot of growth gets it when moved. They often just go limp, and cutting them back helps reduce stress while the roots establish.
I'm surprised your cordylines are thriving in damp shade - sun and good drainage are the normal requirements! It's also normal for them to drop leaves - giving them the trunk that we're familiar with in mature specimens.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I agree with fairygirl. The dead brown leaves will naturally droop downwards hence appearing not to support own weight. Cut them off. I also wouldnt put in damp shade, seems contrary to plants natural habitat. Thats all i know. Good luck
Thanks, would it survive being beheaded in June?
