advise needed for sickly rose

sanjy67sanjy67 Posts: 1,007

i had to dig up three climbing roses from my garden (they are crimson cascade), two are fine and suffered no ill effects but the thirds one is not doing well, i have transferred it to my mums garden and have been watering it daily as instructions say to do until established, what should i do with it now, chop it back and if so how much, it's a pretty slow grower anyway :(

or leave it and see what happens, i went to my mums today (wednesday) and it is yellowing and dropping leaves, when i planted it on saturday it was green but a bit drooping on the ends

According to my rose book it looks as though it is either waterlogged or needs a good feed. Both cause that yellow veining starting in the middle. I would give it a foliar feed and no more watering till the week end. And maybe a dose of rose clear to be sure there's no fungus about. Is it in a very damp spot?

Bear in mind I know next to nothing about roses but the pictures look similar. image Someone else might know better.

I'd cut it right back to a bud a few inches from the ground and cut back on the watering.

But I know nothing about roses either

thanks girls i shall stop watering and cut it back unless david austin comes along and says different image my mums soil is like the parched dessert of horrid dry soil with a million snails thrown in for good measure, but i shall tell her to stop watering it too. i did dig in some compost & manure as i don't think she ever adds anything to the soil image

Sanjay watering daily will drown it. Once a week, 2 gallons is !ore than enough. Cut it back hard and wait. It'll be forming a new root system so be patient.
