sweetcorn struggling

Looking for some help with my sweetcorn plants, I had them growing in a plastic cold frame until they were about cm tall, but since transferring them into big pots and putting them outside moat of their leaves have started to split apart. Could it be the cold rainy weather here or they don't like being re-potted maybe? The main stalks are still sturdy and they're getting more direct sunlight now than before. Any help or advice? Thanks

Time to get them in the ground. Mine have only been in the soil for a few days but have put on a lot of growth.  Yes, its cold and rainy, but the roots need to get down into the soil to support the top growth.

They need to be in the ground. I risked putting them out a few weeks ago and with the hot sun they've put on at least a ft growth.

Plant them in a shallow trench, then earth them up as they grow. The trench gives some protection from wind whilst the roots establish.

The leaves splitting sounds like wind damage which will happen even in the ground. But as said above corn is not a good potted plant.

    Hi steve

I planted my sweet corn about two weeks ago however they have not moved much due to the appalling weather we are experiencing up in the north east it's been rubbish past two for June.

after I planted mine we got thunderstorms and heavy rain forcast which I though would flatten my plants so I got out the protection and tried to stem off what I thought would be a weather disaster however the forecast was wrong it never came thankfully.

i have however left it up just in case and am now praying for sunshine as at this rate the weeds will be taking over if you turn your back

best place is in the ground and if they are prone to damage cover them with anything for protection

    happy gardening

Oh ok, thanks for the advice all! I read somewhere on a 'top 10 veg for pots' type article about sweetcorn and thought to try it, i think it was a bbc article now I think about it. Will pop them in the ground in that case, thanks
