Very large Allium bulbs

MistyblueMistyblue Posts: 1

I got carried away and bought 3 very large Allium bulbs and 3 just a bit smaller (white flower heads, don't know the variety) at a garden festival in Germany. They were €25, so not cheap. Found out how to plant them, depth etc but didn't ask when? Should I plant them in the garden now (June) or perhaps in pots? Any advice please.

Plant three to four times the depth of the bulb, with a layer of grit underneath to keep it free draining. You can plant them any time between now and November, they will start to grow in Spring.

I dont think they do very well in pots unless they are very large and deep.

The white flower heads if they are big, might be "mount everest" or "Mont Blanc"

I would plant them now so they don't dry out but mark the spot to avoid accidents with the border spade or fork later on.

I buy some every autumn to add to my garden stock and have planted them in borders and pots so I could sink them in gaps in the borders later on - purple sensation, sphaerocephallum, nectaroscordum, and a white one.   I have a Christophii which has self seed into a pot and produced a huge flower head this year.  I shall move it to a border when the flower is done.

They like a sunny, well drained site and don't do well if it's too cold or exposed or they get water-logged but are otherwise easy and gorgeous plants to grow.
