Tree ID Please

TomskTomsk Posts: 204

Somehow, a tree has started growing in my garden even though there are no trees anywhere near and birds don't land in my garden. Droppings from birds flying over, perhaps?

Anyway, can anyone identify it, please?

I've spent ages Googling tree leaves but a lot of them look the same to me. Perhaps it's a beech tree of some sort?

I have nowhere to grow a full tree in my tiny garden (and would be scared of the roots doing damage), but how long could I keep it in a large planter before it needs transplanting into proper land?

It looks rather like an ash seedling. These have 'keys' which will whirl in with the wind - bit like sycamores.

ash, lightweight seeds blow a long way.

There would be better trees to choose if you only have room for one in a pot.

I have an ash tree that has been grown as a bonsai and is around 30 years old.I root prune every 2/3 years It has been in various size pots over the years and is about18" tall.

So yes you can keep it in a pot!

Thanks for all the replies. I might try to keep it in a container the size of a large bucket for a few years then.

Will it need much sunlight? There is a spot out the front I could keep it, but it will spend most of its time in the shade.
