I have planted one I was given in a scruffy bit of my front garden and can't wait for it to spread all up and down the road.  Obviously I shall deny all knowledge of it's spreading habit when anyone complains and just apologise sweetly :)  It's just a bog-standard pink one though sadly.

I had no idea what it was but it was poking out through the wire fence around a building site so I pinched it. image It died.

Is it just me? I kill Japanese anemone too. image

  • You can see it sold at garden nurseries under the botanical name Centranthus,

i have just been on the R H S site and they are selling it for £5.99 !!!!!

When mine arrived I kept pulling out all the white and red ones, and now have a lovely spread of red ones - you do have to keep an eye on them though, as any stray seed or seedling can undo your best efforts,  They are lovely at the front over an old stone wall - and in front of the unused garage door!

Who would pay for valerian when they grow everywhere?

It's a bit like paying for a buddleja - they are like weeds now, just dig one up from the nearest railway track or piece of rough ground!

Indeed, but with buddleja you need to pay for specific colours and smaller sizes - as yet, these have not leaked out into the wild as the basic purple one has done - and they can get very tall, where some of the hybrids are smaller and may suit some gardens better.   InFrance they are identified as an invasive weed.   However, buying valerian does seem a little unlikely …………..

  • Valerian is literally one of the easiest plants in the world to propagate from cuttings. Just take some now of the dark red one you want and you'll have loads of plants by the end of the summer.

I'll try some cuttings too. I have mostly white. They fill gaps and give a bit if height - unless they fall over!

I don't mind ' invasive' plants if they're easy to pull out.

    In London. Keen but lazy.
