Digging out spiky leafed palms.

I have a palm plant with very spiky leaves, and now want to dig it out, it's a monster, how can I get rid of it.

How tall is it? If its head height, then I'd take the leaves off before dealing with the trunk. Apparently palms aren't deep rooted which should be a help. Maybe a photo of the thing will prompt some more advice.
I've cut the leaves off, but can't get the rest of it out so easily, but I'll keep at it.

I find rocking things back and forth can help. A couple of ropes around the trunk and some burly helpers can loosen the roots.
That may be the last resort, as this devil is going nowhere at the moment.
