Climbing french beans

One of my six little plants has been nibbled off and left as just a stalk, possibly by a pigeon as there is no trace of the missing bit nor is there any sign of slugs. Is there any point in planting an extra seed or two to fill the gap or is it too late?

I'd plant a couple of extra seeds, they don't take long to get going.

Thank you Sophie, I was hoping that would be the answer and had already thought it could be worth a try. :)

Slugs and snails don't often leave visible trails and they are the most likely culprit.  Try a beer trap near them and you'll know for sure.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Will do Bob although we have a plague of destructive dirty pigeons around here.  I've planted a couple more seeds in the gap and have my fingers tightly crossed.

  • Pop a bottle cloche over each one until it's big enough to fend for itself? I've done that with all my beans.
