hornbeam leaves being eaten?

Hi I have a very large and well established hornbeam hedge approx 15 yrs old,image this year it appears to being eaten badly. there are whitefly on it but suspect they are not eating it to this extent ! does anyone have any ideas and possibly solutions hedge looks like its been attacked with a shotgun !!

    Hi Simon - it looks like caterpillar damage, although I don't know which one. Have you noticed any caterpillars on it?  Hornbeam is usually fairly trouble free. I'd expect a mature hedge like yours would be able to withstand a bit of damage though.

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Thanks fairy girl just had  a really god look to see if there are any caterpillars ; think they have fed sufficiently and flown as new leaves appear undamaged  heres hoping ! and thanks
