First proper harvest 2016

Morning everyone,

rain forecast this week... i think i'll work in the kitchen ????

I can't seem to find a recipe section on the forum. Are there recipe threads for specific crops?

I remember finding a few rhubarb recipes (by the way the bbc goodfood rhubarb and custard cake is delicious!)

    Well that does look good!

I like the idea of recipe section of the forum! I'm always wondering what to do.

  • Food is what got me into gardening, i wanted to get the flavour and more unusual crops i grew up with (i'm from the south of france).

I've got the "Allotment cookbook through the year" which is good as it also gives storage tips. I must have read all the library books on the subject too... Actually there is one i need to get my hands on called "grow your own cakes"

I like how the Allotment cookbook is organised into spring, summer, autumn, winter. I'm slowly changing how i sort my recipes. The starter/ meat/fish/ cake/dessert system is not overly helpful when you are harvesting... So i put all the rhubarb recipes together (plus a list for the recipes that are hiding in the million cookbooks on the shelf... ok shelves). Whether it's cake or relish, i have them handy. It takes a lot of work to get it sorted but it avoids the "another crumble?" situation ?

Anyone else interested in a recipe section or specific recipe threads instead of having recipes scattered in different places?

How do you sort out your own recipes?

I'm a member of a small forum of friendly food-lovers and cooks http://www.wildfood.info/

It started off when the BBC Food Messageboard used to close for the Christmas holidays and became a permanent base for us when the BBC closed the board for good Wildfood (Foodies gone wild).

I post just as regularly on there as I do on here, and some other members post on both.

It seems to work ok for us and all are welcome.image

It all looks so lovely.  Being vegetarian I should really know more vegetable recipes than I do, but I guess I just get stuck in a rut with certain food.  I think a recipe section would be great.

  • Dove, i'm just having a look... might be a few hours... My husband is going to shoot me! ?

I think that's a good idea too image

along with sharing recipes that use seasonal ingredients I think it would be nice to know how to take most advantage of things you can only get from home grown veg -- it's fresher and (if organic) you don't have to choose between peels and pesticides. Recipes that exploited this things would be good!

I had two salads in restaurants recently that contained ingredients that are in/about to be in season. was thinking when some of my veg are ready I might borrow from the combinations:

    Barcelona salad

    - Salad leaves

    - Bacon

    - corn nuts (yes, corn nuts)

    - strawberries (yes, strawberries)

    - balsamic dressing

    Beetroot salad

    - Mixture of golden and cardeal beetroots in big chunks

    - Goats cheese curd

    - Candied walnuts

    - Salad leaves

As far as first harvest goes, so far I have picked a sweetheart cabbage and some Early peas and carrots... and some lovely Rocket salad leaves...   A lot is not ready as yet... But I am looking forward to some tasty fruit and veg..image

  • I think I'd really like those salads! Thank you for sharing Endpaper.

I haven't been able to register on the forum Dove mentioned. I'd really love a recipe section here though as it goes hand in hand with growing your own. Off to start a thread on site feedback...
